Fortnite's latest update, themed around "Gaming Legends," is set to introduce a roster of iconic video game characters, with Sonic the Hedgehog being the latest to be officially revealed. The inclusion of the Sega mascot was heavily anticipated following subtle hints from the game's developer, Epic Games, and Sonic's own social media channels.
The "Gaming Legends" season is specifically targeting beloved video game personalities, expanding Fortnite's already diverse collection of crossover characters. Previous additions to this theme have included Persona 5's Joker. The new update will also feature characters and cosmetics inspired by franchises such as Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Mega Man, Mortal Kombat, Tetris, Pac-Man, and Epic's own character, Jazz Jackrabbit.
A trailer for the update showcases Sonic zipping through a Green Hill Zone-inspired environment alongside Fortnite's character, Jonesy. The visual adaptation of Sonic features his arms and legs stretched to a more humanoid proportion, while his head maintains a balloon-like appearance. This visual style aligns with how Fortnite typically integrates less human-like characters into its battle royale environment.
The upcoming update, scheduled to go live on August 20th, will see Sonic, Knuckles, and potentially other characters from the Sonic universe, such as Shadow the Hedgehog and Doctor Eggman, appearing in the game. The notes suggest that these characters will be equipped with firearms, a significant departure for the typically non-violent hedgehog mascot.
