Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved a monumental $360 million in domestic box office earnings, surpassing even Avengers: Endgame's previous record for its opening weekend. Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman has leveraged the film's success to push back against notions that streaming services are rendering the traditional cinema experience obsolete.

"So, I guess movies aren’t dead after all?" Rothman stated in an interview with Variety. He described the film's performance as "miraculous," highlighting its ability to unite audiences across diverse demographics. Rothman asserted that the unique communal experience of watching a film on a big screen, complete with surround sound and the shared ritual of enjoying concessions, is something that only movie theaters can provide.

Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day also demonstrated significant power, securing the second-highest film debut worldwide with $932 million. This places it just behind Avengers: Endgame's $1.223 billion debut in April 2019.

Regarding the future of the web-slinger on the big screen, Rothman remained coy but optimistic about Tom Holland's return. "Yes," he confirmed when pressed on whether a sequel with Holland is possible. While Holland himself has expressed openness to continuing his role, he has also spoken about the potential for a successor, such as Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen, to take over the mantle in the future. Holland has previously indicated a desire to help set up the next chapter for whoever takes on the Spider-Man role, likening his potential role to that of Robert Downey Jr. for him.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its strong performance, with IMAX screenings set to begin on August 7, extending the theatrical run for the record-breaking film.
