Sony is aiming to capitalize on its existing PlayStation 5 user base with the recent launch of "Live TV on PS5," a free, ad-supported television and movie service offering over 100 channels. Keith Le Goy, chairman of Sony Pictures Television, described the initiative as a strategic move to engage a valuable and often hard-to-reach audience.
Speaking with Variety, Le Goy highlighted the significant overlap between gamers and consumers of film and television. He noted that the 40-50 million PS5 owners represent a highly engaged group that also enjoys entertainment beyond gaming. By offering free content, Sony aims to provide these users with something they desire within a familiar environment, thereby creating a compelling proposition for advertisers and channel partners.
Le Goy elaborated on this synergistic approach, stating that for Sony, this is a case of "one plus one equaling a lot more than two." He believes the company is uniquely positioned to succeed due to its ownership of the PlayStation platform, which offers a passionate and dedicated audience that other companies would covet. This existing engagement with gamers is seen as a key differentiator.
The free, ad-supported model employed by "Live TV on PS5" is similar to other popular FAST services like Tubi, Roku, and Pluto. Users can access the content without charge, provided they are willing to watch advertisements.
This venture into live TV services is not Sony's first attempt with the PlayStation platform. The company previously offered PlayStation Vue, a paid subscription service that required users to pay at least $50 per month. However, Vue was discontinued in 2020 amid a broader trend of cord-cutting and the increasing availability of alternative streaming options.
