Sony has implemented a lottery system in Japan requiring prospective buyers to enter for a chance to purchase the PlayStation 5 Pro, addressing high consumer demand and inflated resale prices. The console's limited availability is attributed to increased component costs, including RAM, and the activities of scalpers.
To be eligible for the lottery in Japan, gamers must possess a Japanese PlayStation Network account with online service access. Additionally, the account needs to show a cumulative playtime of at least 60 hours logged between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. This playtime requirement is designed to deter scalpers from entering the lottery and reselling the console.
The lottery application period is open until October 7, with winners being notified by October 26. Those selected will have until November 2 to purchase the PS5 Pro for 137,980 yen, approximately $875. Sony has cautioned that successful lottery entry does not guarantee an order placement due to anticipated supply limitations.
Currently, similar lottery systems have not been introduced in other regions. However, Sony may consider implementing them elsewhere if demand continues to outstrip supply. This situation arises as players anticipate major releases like Grand Theft Auto 6, potentially facing difficult choices between paying exorbitant resale prices or waiting for broader availability of the PS5 Pro.
