Sony Reportedly Exiting UHD Blu-ray Player Market

Sony is reportedly poised to exit the UHD Blu-ray player market entirely, according to reports circulating from Japanese blogs and industry news outlets. This move follows the company's earlier announcement to cease physical disc production for PlayStation games starting in 2028.

Sources suggest that Sony is discontinuing the UBP-X700/K, its final standalone UHD Blu-ray player in Japan. While Sony has not issued an official statement, the product listing on its Japanese online store indicates it is out of stock and will not be restocked. The UBP-X700/K, released in May 2025, became Sony's sole remaining model after the UBP-X800M2 was discontinued over a year prior. The PlayStation 5's disc edition does support UHD Blu-ray playback, but it lacks Dolby Vision support, a key feature for enhanced HDR video. Sony will continue to offer standard Blu-ray and DVD players.

This decision, if implemented globally, would leave Panasonic as the primary major electronics manufacturer still selling UHD Blu-ray players. Sony's actions in Japan often precede worldwide product strategy shifts, making a global discontinuation of the UBP-X700/K highly probable.

The broader implications of Sony's retreat from physical media have already drawn significant backlash. The announcement regarding the end of game disc production led to widespread criticism across PlayStation's social media channels. Concerns often center on the nature of digital ownership, with many users arguing that digital purchases grant a license rather than true ownership of the content. This issue has been highlighted in ongoing legal disputes, including one where Sony is reportedly arguing that players do not own their digital games.

Further examples of Sony's diminishing support for physical media ownership include the removal of over 500 films from users' PlayStation accounts after a rights deal expired, and a recent policy change for the Crunchyroll Store that restricts purchases of physical anime Blu-rays to subscribers of higher membership tiers. As media consumption increasingly shifts towards streaming and digital access, the discontinuation of UHD Blu-ray players marks another significant step away from physical media for Sony.
