Sony has unveiled a new, sophisticated aesthetic for its current-generation console with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition Midnight Black. This new iteration features the entire console and its accompanying DualSense controller in a unified, matte-black finish, aiming for a more understated look compared to previous limited editions.
This stealthy new design is set to launch on November 19th, coinciding with the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. The console will be priced at ¥55,000 in Japan. However, there is a significant caveat for international fans: the Midnight Black PS5 is currently exclusive to the Japanese market. This follows a precedent set last year when Sony released a Japan-exclusive PlayStation 5, citing differences in import tariffs and trade policies that influence pricing in different regions.
The Japanese-exclusive Midnight Black PlayStation 5 Digital Edition includes the console and a matching DualSense controller. For those who wish to play physical media, a separate Midnight Black disc drive will also be available for purchase in Japan, priced at ¥11,980.
While direct purchase outside of Japan is not an option, Sony does offer Midnight Black console covers for existing PlayStation 5 hardware, available for $54 in the United States. This allows players to customize their current consoles to match the new aesthetic, though it requires an additional purchase on top of the console's original price.
