Sony's plan to cease support for physical discs on PlayStation consoles, initially announced at the start of July, has been met with significant player disapproval. In the week following this news, the company remained largely silent on social media. Sony has since attempted to redirect the conversation towards new hardware with an announcement about its FlexStrike wireless fight stick. However, this product launch has been largely overshadowed by the ongoing anger and resentment directed at the decision to phase out physical media by early 2028.
While the FlexStrike might have garnered positive attention under different circumstances, its announcement has been met with a deluge of negative responses from gamers. Many of these reactions are critical, satirical, or a combination of both, with some comments deemed too profane to be shared. Although there may be some support for Sony's decision, it has been largely buried on social media platforms.
Companies such as iam8bit and GameFly have publicly expressed their disappointment with Sony's move away from physical discs. Analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea Analytics suggests that this strategic shift could be aimed at enabling Sony to exert greater control over pricing and distribution. The elimination of physical discs effectively removes the used game market, positioning Sony's online store as the primary, and in many cases only, outlet for digital game sales, aside from physical copies that primarily contain game codes.
Further concerns have been raised regarding Sony's potential implementation of dynamic pricing, which could lead to some players being charged more than others while artificially maintaining high prices. This situation is further underscored by Sony's concurrent plans to close the online stores for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, highlighting a perceived lack of permanence in the digital marketplace.
