Sony Pictures has shifted the release date for its upcoming Helldivers movie, moving it from November 10, 2027, to June 9, 2028. This strategic repositioning places the film at the start of the summer box office season, a move that could signal Sony's confidence in the project.
However, the delay also raises questions about the game's sustained cultural relevance by the time the movie premieres. The original Helldivers game launched in 2015, but it was the 2024 sequel, Helldivers 2, that propelled the franchise into the spotlight. The game garnered significant acclaim upon its release for PlayStation 5 and PC, with its popularity surging further following its Xbox Series X port and the implementation of cross-platform play.
Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Reacher, is set to star as a soldier tasked with defending Super Earth from extraterrestrial threats. He replaces Jason Momoa, who was previously attached to the project but exited earlier this year. Justin Lin, director of Fast & Furious, remains on board to helm the film. Details regarding the rest of the cast are still to be announced.
