Sony has announced that as of January 2028, no new PlayStation games will be released on physical discs. This significant shift towards an all-digital future has generated considerable backlash from both gamers and game developers, particularly within Japan.
The decision has amplified concerns regarding game preservation and the long-term accessibility of digital titles. Hideo Kojima, a prominent game developer, has resurfaced past comments expressing anxiety about a digital-only future. In 2021 tweets, Kojima articulated fears that individuals would eventually cease to own digital data, making games, movies, and music potentially inaccessible due to unforeseen global or governmental changes.
Developers also foresee potential impacts on publishing timelines. Masami Yamamoto of Shueisha Games noted that the absence of a disc version could allow for an extra month and a half of polish time for game masters. However, even with day-one patches now common, a finalized state free from gameplay-hindering flaws is typically required two months before release for disc production.
Japan's robust second-hand game market faces significant disruption. Voice actor and gamer Masaru Yoshimura voiced his disappointment, stating his hobby of browsing physical PlayStation titles in stores would be negatively affected. The option to purchase physical copies has also been a draw for some consumers who choose PlayStation over PC for its disc-based or limited edition physical releases.
The timing of Sony's announcement, coinciding with the shutdown of PS3 and Vita online stores, has fueled customer anxiety. Many are questioning whether digitally purchased games could become unplayable at Sony's discretion, a concern exacerbated by the company's recent decision to delete over 550 purchased movies from PlayStation users without refunds.
While digital sales have been on the rise, with Sony reporting 78% of game sales in 2025 were downloads, the move to eliminate physical media raises questions about true ownership versus a mere license to play. This trend toward digital-only is further indicated by reports that future consoles, including the rumored PS6 and Microsoft's Project Helix, may launch without disc drives.
In a notable response, the UK's Domino's Pizza account humorously mimicked Sony's decision by stating it would switch to digital-only pizzas, with KFC also making similar jesting remarks.
Despite an IGN poll indicating that 90% of readers oppose an all-digital gaming future, Sony appears committed to its plan, with disc production workers reportedly being reassigned to other business areas. This marks a clear indication of the industry's continued trajectory toward digital distribution.
