PlayStation 5 consoles are beginning to feature disclaimers on their packaging that indicate a shift towards a digital-only future for games. The warning stickers inform consumers that as of January 2028, new game releases on the PlayStation platform will be exclusively available for purchase through the PlayStation Store and in digital format at retailers. The stickers also clarify that discs for games released prior to this date will remain playable on the console.

The warning was reportedly first spotted on new PS5 console restocks, brought to light by YouTuber Behind the Games, who cited a trusted source for their information. The text on the sticker aligns with information found on European Amazon listings for PS5 consoles, suggesting Sony is complying with regional consumer laws.

Sony's decision to phase out physical game discs has reportedly been met with significant backlash. Social media has seen users calling for boycotts and urging Sony to reverse its plans. Despite this public reaction, Sony appears to be moving forward. During a recent investor Q&A session, Sony CFO Lin Tao acknowledged the "strong views" surrounding the announcement but stated the company would proceed "cautiously."

This move is underpinned by a widening gap in game sales ratios between physical and digital formats. In the last reported quarter, from April to June, 82% of Sony's game sales were digital. This trend has informed the company's strategy as it prepares for a future where physical media for games is no longer offered.
