Sony's ambitious expansion of the Spider-Man universe, dubbed the Spider-Man Universe by some, is undergoing significant adjustments. While the original vision for a sprawling connected world may be re-evaluated, several projects related to Spider-Man characters are still in various stages of development, including highly anticipated animated sequels and new live-action series.
Animated Spider-Verse and Venom
The animated Spider-Verse saga continues with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, currently in production and slated for release on June 18, 2027. This sequel aims to resolve the cliffhangers presented in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Previously scheduled for an earlier release, Sony shifted its slate in July 2023.
Beyond the live-action realm, an animated Venom movie is also in development. Directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, this feature-length project marks a new direction for the character in animation.
Live-Action Continuations and Reboots
Tom Holland's Spider-Man is expected to return, with Spider-Man: Brand New Day serving as the likely beginning of a new trilogy. A sequel to Brand New Day is in development, with director Destin Daniel Cretton returning. While details remain scarce, Holland's presence is also anticipated in major Marvel crossover events like Avengers: Secret Wars.
However, the broader live-action shared universe faces a potential reboot. Following the underperformance of Kraven the Hunter in 2024, Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman indicated in February 2026 that a reboot is being considered. This follows earlier statements suggesting that the universe was not intentionally designed as a cohesive entity, but rather as an avenue for potentially worthwhile character-driven films.
Television Series Development
A live-action Spider-Man Noir series, featuring Nicolas Cage as the titular gumshoe detective with spider powers, debuted in May 2026. The show, set in a Depression-era Marvel Universe and produced by Into the Spider-Verse creators Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, has garnered positive reception. Whether a second season will materialize remains uncertain.
The Silk: Spider Society series, initially planned as part of a partnership between Sony, MGM, and Prime Video, has reportedly been dropped by Amazon/MGM+ as of May 2024. Sony is said to be seeking other buyers for the project, which would follow Cindy Moon's origin story. The series was originally conceived as a movie before evolving into a television format.
Projects in Limbo and Unrealized Concepts
An all-female Into the Spider-Verse spin-off, which was rumored to include characters like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman, has not seen significant updates since its initial reveal in 2018 and is presumed to be canceled.
Past unrealized projects include Silver & Black, a proposed team-up film for Silver Sable and Black Cat that was eventually shelved. Reports from 2020 suggested these characters might instead feature in TV projects. Director Spike Lee was also in talks to direct a Nightwatch film, though he has since denied attachment. A Jackpot movie was reported to be in development around August 2018, with Marc Guggenheim attached to write the screenplay by 2020, but this project also appears stalled.
El Muerto, a film centered on the wrestler with superpowers, starring Bad Bunny, was announced with a January 2024 release date. However, filming had not begun by April 2023, and subsequent reports indicated the film was in a state of flux, with Bad Bunny himself suggesting he had dropped out by September 2023.
While Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman Tony Vinciquerra outlined plans in 2019 for the studio's Marvel assets over the subsequent seven to eight years, the current status of many of these projects remains fluid, with time likely to reveal the fate of each endeavor.
