Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino has stated that the company does not plan to incur significant losses on its next-generation hardware, signaling a shift in strategy for the PlayStation 6.
During a Q&A session concerning Sony's Game & Network Services division, Nishino addressed concerns about hardware pricing and profitability. He acknowledged that while hardware is fundamental to the gaming experience, it is "not realistic for us to absorb all component cost increases." Sony has already implemented some price adjustments outside of Japan, and Nishino noted that current sales are meeting projections without a discernible decline in customer demand.
"As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses," Nishino stated. "At present, however, sales are proceeding as planned, and we do not believe this has led to a decline in customer demand. As a principle, we do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses. At the same time, we are carefully monitoring the market and continuing to evaluate our approach. We believe it is important for us to make every effort to ensure that customers fully understand the value we provide in relation to pricing."
This confirmation comes amid a challenging period for console sales. May saw a significant year-on-year drop for PlayStation in the United States, with console spending decreasing by 43% and unit sales falling by 58%, marking the lowest May performance in 26 years. Microsoft also experienced a difficult May, reporting its worst performance since the Xbox's debut in November 2001.
Factors such as ongoing memory chip shortages and rising costs have reportedly impacted Sony's PS6 development timeline, with some industry experts anticipating a launch toward the end of the decade. Sony previously increased the price of the PlayStation 5 earlier this year and has yet to disclose pricing or a launch date for its successor. Similarly, Microsoft has not ruled out further price increases for the Xbox Series X|S consoles, potentially by 2027. MADE 4571906-ps5games2025.jpg
