Sony has officially announced that it will discontinue the production of physical discs for its PlayStation consoles beginning in January 2028. The decision, detailed in a recent blog update, is a direct response to a significant decline in physical game disc sales.

Moving forward, all new game titles, encompassing both first-party and third-party releases, will be exclusively available through the PlayStation Store and in digital formats at retail locations. Sony has emphasized that this transition will not affect games already released or those slated for release prior to the 2028 deadline. The company stated this change will "align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today," and that resources will continue to be prioritized where consumers access their games.

This move by Sony aligns with a years-long trend observed in sales data, which has shown PlayStation owners increasingly favoring digital purchases over physical editions. The upcoming major release, Grand Theft Auto 6, is also expected to be a digital-only product, with retail versions consisting of a code within a box.

Recent hardware developments also support this shift. Both Sony and Microsoft released console versions in 2020 that omitted disc drives, and Sony's PS5 Pro does not include one by default, though a modular attachment is available. It is anticipated that the next generation of PlayStation consoles will also forgo a physical media drive in their base models as Sony aims to reduce manufacturing costs.

Piers Harding-Rolls, senior games research analyst at Ampere Analysis, suggested to Game File that this development "pretty much guarantees that PS6 won't arrive until 2028 at the earliest." Furthermore, the trend extends to the diminishing role of physical discs even for games that do include them, as many now serve primarily as authentication keys, with the bulk of game data requiring a substantial download to the console.

In parallel with the cessation of disc production, Sony is also proceeding with the closure of the PlayStation Store on the PS3 and PS Vita platforms.
