Sony is set to discontinue the PlayStation Store on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita consoles, with a complete shutdown slated for July 2027. However, the company confirmed that some markets will experience earlier closures of the digital storefront.

According to Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, the decision stems from the PlayStation Store's need to evolve to support modern commerce systems and updated payment processing standards. Both the PS3 and PS Vita platforms are unable to meet the necessary requirements for these advancements.

The phased rollout of the PlayStation Store closures begins in August 2026 for Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua on the PS3. Additional countries in Latin America and the Middle East will see their PS3 PlayStation Stores close in late 2026. For all other regions, the PlayStation Store on both PS3 and PS Vita will cease operations in July 2027.

Sony acknowledged that this news may be disappointing for players who have fond memories of these platforms. The company stated that the PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in PlayStation history, making the decision difficult. Access to the PlayStation Store for new purchases on these consoles ended in 2021, but users have since been able to redownload previously acquired games.

The PlayStation 3, which launched in November 2006, debuted alongside the PlayStation Store, offering digital games and downloadable content. The PlayStation Vita, released in December 2011, also supported the PlayStation Store from its launch. Production of PS3 hardware concluded in 2017, followed by the Vita in 2019.

Given the history of digital-only titles and available content on both the PS3 and Vita, active users of these older platforms may wish to secure any desired content before the store's closure. This announcement follows Sony's prior decision to end physical game disc production in 2028.
