Sony is preparing to shut down the digital storefronts for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, marking the end of an era for the company's legacy gaming platforms. The PlayStation Store on both consoles will become inaccessible for new purchases in select regions starting later this year and globally by July 2027. This move follows Sony's earlier decision to cease production of physical discs for new PlayStation games in January 2028, signaling a continued push towards a digital-only future.
Store Closure Timeline
The closure will be phased, with specific dates varying by region. In Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua, the PlayStation Store on PS3 will cease operations starting in August 2026. Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries will follow, with PS3 store closures beginning in late 2026. For all other regions globally, both the PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Stores will officially close in July 2027.
Once these storefronts are shuttered, owners will no longer be able to purchase new digital content for their PS3 or Vita systems. However, Sony has assured players that previously purchased content will remain available for download for the foreseeable future, easing the transition for existing owners.
A Shift in Focus
In a statement on the PlayStation Blog, Sony acknowledged that this decision may be disappointing for players who have fond memories of these consoles. The company emphasized that the PS3 and PS Vita represent a significant period in PlayStation's history. However, as Sony continues to develop and expand its gaming experiences on current-generation devices, resources need to be reallocated. The focus will be on delivering the best possible gaming experiences on newer platforms.
The PlayStation Store first launched on the PS3 in 2006, operating for nearly two decades on the platform. This marks the first time Sony has closed a digital storefront for its older consoles. Both Nintendo and Xbox have previously taken similar steps, closing their respective eShop for the Wii U and 3DS in March 2023 and the Xbox 360 store.
In related news, Sony also announced plans to remove hundreds of purchased movies and TV shows from digital libraries due to expiring content licensing agreements, further underscoring the company's strategic adjustments in content distribution and platform support.
