Sony will discontinue the production of physical game discs for all PlayStation titles starting in January 2028. Following this date, new PlayStation games will only be available in digital formats, sold through the PlayStation Store and at physical retailers.
This change applies to all games released on PlayStation consoles, including titles from third-party developers, not solely those published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. Games released before January 2028 or those already on the market will not be affected by this transition.
Sony stated that the decision reflects evolving consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry's move away from physical media. The company noted that the preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs, with a majority of its community favoring digital access and play.
"As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028," Sony announced. "Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only."
Sony indicated that it will continue to prioritize resources for innovation in game accessibility and provide players with choices for purchasing new games, whether through retail or the PlayStation Store. The company affirmed its commitment to delivering a high-quality gaming experience.
This move by Sony aligns with industry trends, such as Rockstar's recent announcement that Grand Theft Auto 6 will include a download code in its packaging instead of a physical disc, a decision that also curtails the resale of used copies.
