Sony Interactive Entertainment will cease manufacturing physical game discs for PlayStation consoles in January 2028, marking a significant shift towards a digital-first future for the platform. This decision, announced on Wednesday, reflects the ongoing trend of consumers increasingly opting for digital game purchases over physical media.

Following the January 2028 cutoff, new PlayStation titles will be exclusively available through the PlayStation Store and other digital retailers. Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, stated that this transition aligns with the evolving preferences of the gaming community, enabling Sony to better cater to how players access and enjoy games today.

Physical software sales constituted a mere 3% of PlayStation's total sales in 2024, according to Sony's 2025 corporate report. This decline in physical media's market share is a global trend across the entertainment industry, with digital media sales significantly outpacing physical formats.

The move also comes on the heels of Rockstar Games' decision to release Grand Theft Auto 6 digitally only, with physical editions offering a download code. While Sony has not explicitly stated whether it will continue selling physical game boxes containing download codes, the discontinuation of disc manufacturing suggests a strong move away from the traditional retail model.

Industry analysts note that full-game digital sales now represent approximately 80% of PlayStation software sales and 90% on Xbox. This shift is further encouraged by rising hardware costs, making digital-only consoles a more appealing option for budget-conscious consumers. A PlayStation 5 console with a disc drive currently starts at $649.99, while Microsoft's Xbox with an optical disc drive is set to cost $799.99.

Sony's announcement coincides with a shrinking retail presence for dedicated gaming stores, such as GameStop, which has closed over 1,300 locations in the past two fiscal years. Publisher Capcom has also reported that digital sales account for 93% of its total game sales, a figure projected to reach 94.5% this year.

The end of physical disc production is anticipated to be a significant blow to game collectors and preservationists who value physical copies. This strategic change also occurs alongside the news that the PlayStation Store will be ending support for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita devices.
