Sony has officially revealed a new Lego set that allows fans to construct a near-scale replica of the original PlayStation console. The announcement was made during the company's recent State of Play event, showcasing the iconic gray panels, a controller, and a disc tray that can be opened and closed.
The Lego set, comprised of 1,911 pieces, is designed as a detailed recreation of the classic console, even featuring a clickable power button. It is slated for release on October 1, with PlayStation direct pre-orders opening on that date. Lego Insiders can also secure the set on October 1 via the Lego website, while the general public will gain access on October 4 through Lego stores and the website.
Fans have noted the prominent inclusion of a functional disc drive in the Lego model, with some jokingly suggesting it as a feature for the future PlayStation 6. This detail has drawn particular attention given Sony's announced plans to cease production of new physical PlayStation games in 2028.
The company's decision to move towards an all-digital future has generated significant criticism online. Since the announcement, Sony's social media accounts and support lines have been inundated with negative comments, and some consumers have vowed to boycott future PlayStation consoles. The backlash has reportedly led Sony to implement new policies to protect its support staff from abusive interactions. Despite the widespread opposition, the company has given no indication that it intends to alter its digital-only trajectory.
