Soulframe, the fantasy action-RPG developed by Digital Extremes, is currently accessible to all players for a limited period. This open period coincides with the introduction of several new features, including the dark Vadagar progression path, wolf mounts, and an upcoming "Warsongs" origin quest.

The Vadagar progression path, or "Pact," significantly alters the player character, known as an "Envoy." This transformation is described as channeling the powers of the Ode, Soulframe's enemy faction focused on corrupting the world's resources. The Vadagar class gains three core stats called Vespers: Wrath, Doom, and Death. Its abilities involve manipulating a substance referred to as "goop," such as creating pillars, conduits, or summoning "goop horses." This path also includes a whipsword, a corrupted version of a standard weapon, and access to a special mount after defeating the new boss, the Mendicant Reinbreaker.

Embracing the Ode's Perspective

Despite its association with the antagonist Ode faction, the Vadagar path is presented as a choice rather than a permanent alignment. Players can adopt the Vadagar pact without forfeiting access to other progression paths. The game's narrative emphasizes an "ecofable" theme, with elements of nature and cute creatures integrated into its world. Players begin sessions slumbering among birds and bunnies and can rescue smaller creatures from enemy camps. The game also implements mechanics designed to avoid perceived animal suffering; defeating an enemy wardog, for instance, involves removing an enslaving helm rather than harming the creature. A "vegan fishing" minigame is also planned, where players cleanse mutated fish rather than catching them.

New Quests and Combat

The "Warsongs" questline is set to delve into the origins and parentage of the player character. This narrative arc introduces a new villain, Tempest Bayor, voiced by Ben Starr. Players will experience this story from multiple perspectives across different time periods, including a younger version of their character and new characters like an arrow-shot beaver. The questline will also feature a new boomerang weapon that utilizes timed button presses for combo attacks. Additionally, a witchy empress character voiced by Jennifer English will be introduced.

Wolf mounts are slated for release later this year, with several Soulframe updates planned beforehand, including a new weather system and other supporting features. The game's combat is designed to be more methodical and duel-oriented, potentially appealing to players who find Warframe's fast-paced action overwhelming. However, Soulframe retains a similar emphasis on loot, crafting, and grinding, suggesting it caters to players willing to invest significant time and learn its lore and in-game economy.
