Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved significant commercial success, becoming the top domestic box-office hit of 2026 and earning $2.5 billion globally. The film, which features popular Marvel heroes and Sadie Sink as the tragic villain Jean Grey, maintained a theatrical run of 70 days before its digital release on October 6. Physical editions are set to arrive on December 15, including a variety of special features.
Among these extras is a featurette titled "Live-Action Comics," which Polygon is exclusively revealing. This segment showcases how director Destin Daniel Cretton and stunt coordinator Peng Zhang meticulously recreated iconic Marvel Comics covers in live-action form. For instance, Peter Parker’s initial confrontation with Tombstone (Marvin Jones III) draws inspiration from the cover of Gerry Conway and Sal Buscema’s 1988 Spectacular Spider-Man comic. Similarly, the fight scene involving Scorpion (Michael Mando) is based on art by Alex Saviuk from the 1995 issue of Spider-Man Adventures.
Cretton utilized large printouts of these comic covers, mounted on easels, as a reference point for planning how to translate them onto the screen. Some of these recreations led to unexpected moments, such as Spider-Man concluding his battle with Scorpion by dropping a piano onto him, which was sourced from a nearby moving truck.
"What was fun about these comic book covers was looking at the image and then trying to imagine what happened before and after this snapshot," Cretton explains in the featurette.
