Sony is reportedly planning a theatrical rerelease of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, aiming to draw audiences back to cinemas with additional footage. This strategy echoes Marvel Studios' recent release of Avengers Endgame: Encore, which also featured new content to boost box office performance.
According to a report by Deadline, the rerelease of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to include new scenes, one of which features a cut cameo from Claire Temple, also known as Night Nurse. Rosario Dawson portrayed Temple across various Marvel Netflix series, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. Dawson has previously mentioned filming a scene for Brand New Day that did not make the initial theatrical cut. Deadline suggests that the additional footage may contain further surprises beyond the Temple cameo.
This would not be the first time Sony has rereleased one of its Spider-Man films. Previously, the studio offered an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home and a "More Fun Stuff Version" of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which included deleted scenes. Such rereleases have historically aimed to increase the films' overall box office earnings.
As of its initial run, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has achieved a domestic box office total of $950 million and a worldwide gross of $2.495 billion. While this makes it the highest-grossing domestic film to date and the third-highest-grossing worldwide behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame, a rerelease is unlikely to surpass the original Avatar's worldwide total.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently playing in theaters, with a potential return engagement planned if these reports prove accurate.
