Sony Pictures is reportedly planning a theatrical rerelease of its 2026 blockbuster, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including new footage to entice audiences back to cinemas. This move follows the trend of re-releasing successful films, similar to Marvel Studios' expanded version of Avengers: Endgame.
According to Deadline, the extended cut of Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature additional scenes, notably an appearance by Rosario Dawson as Claire Temple, also known as Night Nurse. Dawson's character, who previously appeared in multiple Netflix Marvel series, had a scene cut from the original theatrical release of Brand New Day. Sources suggest that Sony has more surprises planned for the extra footage beyond this cameo.
This would not be the first time Sony has rereleased a Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film. The studio previously offered an extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home and a "More Fun Stuff Version" of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which included deleted scenes.
The rerelease is expected to boost the film's already substantial box office total. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed $2.5 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing domestic film to date with $958 million after two months in theaters. It ranks as the third-highest-grossing movie globally, behind Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. While the rerelease may add to its total, it is unlikely to surpass James Cameron's Avatar, which currently leads by $428 million.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains in theaters, with plans for a subsequent return to cinemas.
