Following an exceptionally strong debut at the box office, Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is heading to IMAX theaters across North America starting August 6. This move will see the film take over select IMAX screens from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, which has also experienced significant success.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day generated a domestic opening weekend total of $360 million, marking the largest opening weekend in U.S. history. Globally, the film achieved an opening of $927 million, placing it second only to Avengers: Endgame's $1.22 billion opening. The combined success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey propelled the domestic box office to over $430 million for the weekend, establishing a new record for the biggest weekend in U.S. box office history.

Despite some recent underperformance from other Marvel Cinematic Universe films, the Spider-Man franchise continues to demonstrate its box office appeal. Spider-Man: No Way Home achieved nearly $2 billion in ticket sales, and its predecessor, Spider-Man: Far From Home, surpassed the $1 billion mark. This consistent performance highlights the franchise's reliability.

The combined success of major releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey is contributing to a strong year for the domestic box office, which is on pace to exceed $10 billion for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. The current domestic box office total stands at over $6 billion. While Toy Story 5 currently holds the top spot for highest-grossing film in the U.S., Spider-Man: Brand New Day is expected to surpass it. This surge in performance offers a much-needed boost for Disney, following less successful releases such as the live-action Moana and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu.

IMAX is also experiencing a highly successful period, having recorded $1.28 billion at the global box office in 2025, its best year on record. The Odyssey has become the fastest film to earn $200 million in IMAX, with its IMAX 70mm format contributing significantly to its box office performance. The addition of Spider-Man: Brand New Day to IMAX programming suggests a continued trend of driving audiences to theaters for premium viewing experiences.
