Jon Watts, the director behind Marvel's recent Spider-Man trilogy, has been selected by Disney to direct the first film in a new Star Wars trilogy. This project is intended to continue the Skywalker Saga and is being penned by writer Simon Kinberg, known for his work on "Star Wars: Rebels" and "Mr. and Mrs. Smith."
Details surrounding the plot remain scarce, but reports suggest that Daisy Ridley's character, Rey Skywalker, will feature in the story. Watts' involvement so far is limited to directing the first movie of this new trilogy, and Disney has not yet officially greenlit the project as foundational work continues. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this film is further along in development than most other Star Wars projects, surpassed only by "Star Wars: Starfighter," which has a May 28, 2027 release date.
Watts made his directorial debut in the blockbuster scene with 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and continued with its sequels "Far From Home" and "No Way Home." He later moved on from directing Holland's subsequent superhero films.
Kinberg's involvement with a new Star Wars trilogy was first reported in 2024, though initial information was conflicting regarding whether it would continue the Skywalker Saga or introduce an entirely new narrative. Current indications point towards a continuation of the established saga, though the project's early development means changes are possible.
Lucasfilm has faced challenges in its theatrical releases since "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" concluded the nine-film arc in 2019, receiving mixed critical reception. The upcoming "The Mandalorian and Grogu" will end a seven-year drought of Star Wars films, though its critical and box office performance was considered underwhelming.
Despite cinematic struggles, Star Wars has found success in television with critically acclaimed series such as "Andor." Other shows like "Maul – Shadow Lord" and "Skeleton Crew" have also garnered dedicated audiences.
With ongoing leadership shifts at Lucasfilm, Disney has affirmed its commitment to expanding the Star Wars universe. Numerous films and shows are in development, including "Maul – Shadow Lord Season 2" and "Ahsoka Season 2," both anticipated next year. While fan interest in projects like a potential "Hunt for Ben Solo" film persists, Lucasfilm head Dave Filoni has indicated a positive future for Star Wars cinema.
