Veteran Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal has expressed a desire for Tom Holland to continue his role as the iconic web-slinger "forever." This sentiment comes even as Holland himself has privately and publicly discussed the possibility of handing over the Spider-Man mantle to a younger star.
Holland is set to star in the upcoming film Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and while he has indicated he will return for at least one more sequel, his public statements often reflect a wish to eventually transition the character. He has even suggested potential actors who could take on the role in future installments.
Sony appears eager to retain Holland, particularly with Spider-Man: Brand New Day anticipated to be a significant success. The trailer for the film has already set a new record for trailer views, surpassing even that of Avengers: Doomsday.
When asked about the future of Holland's tenure as Spider-Man and whether Brand New Day was conceived as part of a trilogy or a standalone story, Pascal emphasized the independent nature of each film. "I think each movie has to be its own thing, no matter what," Pascal told Collider. "From the very beginning, Kevin [Feige, Marvel Studios boss] and I have been working together on these movies, we realized this morning, for 27 years, and every time we set out to tell another saga in Peter Parker's life, it has to be able to stand on its own completely. Having said that, we hope Tom's going to be our Spider-Man forever."
Holland first donned the Spider-Man suit in 2026's Captain America: Civil War at the age of 19. Now 30, his involvement beyond Brand New Day has not been officially detailed. However, Sony has hinted at a new era for Holland's character, and many fans anticipate his appearance in 2027's Avengers: Secret Wars.
Holland's past comments about aging out of the role have been a point of discussion. He famously stated in 2021 that playing Spider-Man past the age of 30 would indicate he had "done something wrong." In a more recent interview, he adjusted this to perhaps 37, humorously suggesting he used the earlier statement to "leverage Sony and scare them into thinking I wasn’t going to do Spider-Man 4."
Despite these remarks, Holland has also expressed a desire to help usher in a new generation of Spider-Man heroes. In May, he stated his wish to "set up the next chapter" for whoever takes over, whether it's a Miles Morales, a Spider-Gwen, or a different Spider-Woman.
More recently, Holland specifically mentioned Owen Cooper, the 16-year-old British actor from the Netflix drama Adolescence, as a potential successor. "Owen Cooper would be awesome," Holland commented. "Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now."
Whether Holland's comments are an attempt to negotiate future contracts or genuine reflections on his evolving relationship with the character, Sony's interest in keeping him as Spider-Man for the foreseeable future appears strong. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release on July 31, and its final trailer was released yesterday, offering a recap of Peter Parker's journey to date.
