The nearly three-decade-long wait for closure on the iconic season 5 cliffhanger of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is officially over. Original writer John Semper is set to resolve the fate of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson in a new comic special, Spider-Man '94 Annual #1, scheduled for release on December 9.
This new comic will pick up directly after the events of the 1998 season finale, where Peter Parker defeated his foe and was last seen preparing to reunite with Mary Jane, a reunion that was never shown due to the series' cancellation. Semper, who also helmed the original show, expressed that he did not initially grasp the impact the unresolved ending had on fans, calling it a source of "trauma" for many. The Annual aims to provide the definitive conclusion that viewers never received.
Last year, Marvel released the five-issue series Spider-Man '94, which continued the story of Peter and Mary Jane without directly addressing their reunion. The characters also made a brief appearance in the recent X-Men '97 animated series. Semper's upcoming Annual will bridge the gap between the original series' final episode and the events of the Spider-Man '94 comic, focusing specifically on resolving the central romantic storyline.
While some fans may have hoped for a full revival of the animated series, similar to the successful run of X-Men '97, Semper's involvement in resolving the cliffhanger through a comic suggests this is unlikely. Such a revival could also potentially complicate upcoming projects, including the second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
