The upcoming Spyro: A Realm Beyond exists largely due to the persistent advocacy of its fanbase, according to Toys for Bob studio head Paul Yan and associate creative director Lou Studdert. The studio stated that the community's "loud and consistent" calls for a new entry in the franchise were a key factor in greenlighting the project. "Every year, every gaming event we hear the fanbase show up, like, 'when is there going to be a new Spyro title?' even before we had even pitched this," Yan told GamesRadar+.
Studdert noted the character's significance within the studio, stemming from their previous work on the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and the Skylanders series. "Spyro has kind of a deep place in our studio's heart," he explained, adding that the team "always wanted to return to the world of Spyro, to bring that character forward." The underdog narrative of Spyro taking on overwhelming odds also resonates with the studio, which sees parallels in the character's story. "Honestly, it just was a no-brainer."
When presenting their plans to Xbox, Yan highlighted the community's enthusiasm. "Look, there's a community, it's loud and consistent, they know what they want, you're here to make this game, what else do you need, let's get this thing going," he recounted.
The sentiment of love for the character and similar titles is long-standing at Toys for Bob. "We love Spyro, love Banjo, love all these types of titles. We've been doing this all along. It's not a new thing that we're shifting to, but we want to carry that type of experience into the world," Yan said. The studio believes that the gaming landscape benefits from such experiences.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is slated for a Spring 2027 release. It is set to launch on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2. The game will feature Tom Kenny, Spyro's original voice actor, reprising his role. This marks the first entirely new Spyro game in nearly two decades.
