Square Enix has responded to fan accusations that AI-generated imagery was used in promotional art for the forthcoming Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3. The claims, which first surfaced in early June, have now been addressed by the publisher approximately two months later.
"We're aware of feedback regarding recent Kingdom Hearts visuals," a Square Enix representative told GameSpot. "These assets were created by our development team without the use of generative AI, and the issues resulted from human error."
The representative acknowledged the online discussion and confirmed that Square Enix plans to update the artwork to rectify the specific elements that players identified as potentially AI-generated.
Players pointed to several discrepancies in the artwork, including Donald Duck appearing with inconsistent finger counts on one hand and exhibiting "melting" effects on his zipper. Mickey Mouse's keyblade chain was noted to change mid-way down, Sora's shoes did not match his in-game model, and clock tower hands appeared inaccurately bent in comparison to previous official art.
An updated asset has since been released, which addresses the issues with Donald's hands. However, it does not appear to modify the clock tower, chains, or Sora's footwear.
Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3 is scheduled for release on PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S on October 8, 2026. In the interim, players can look forward to updates on Kingdom Hearts 4, which has recently shown signs of development activity after a prolonged period of quiet.
