Square Enix is open to the possibility of more movie and television adaptations of its game properties, particularly the Final Fantasy series, according to Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the Final Fantasy VII Remake Trilogy and director of the original Final Fantasy VII.

Kitase shared his optimistic outlook in an interview with IGN at the Lucca Comics & Games Festival 2026. While he could not reveal specific plans, he noted that the extensive world-building in the Final Fantasy VII Remake series could pave the way for future adaptations.

"Given the fact that we created this game, the remake of Final Fantasy VII, which explored the world of Final Fantasy VII way more than the original version, I think that it would be nice to have in the future games or TV series inspired by the story of Final Fantasy. And I don't see why that should not be a possibility in the future," Kitase stated.

He also suggested that Square Enix may focus on developing new original intellectual properties (IP) following the completion of the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. However, he acknowledged that the company might still invest in revisiting existing franchises when creators have strong attachments and a desire to create new content for them, as was the case with the Final Fantasy VII Remake.

"I think that mainly, we are more likely to invest in new titles and new games, but at the same time, for example, this time with the [Final Fantasy VII] remake, there was me and other creators who worked on the original game, which we had really strong feelings towards," Kitase explained. "And we really wanted to create something new related to the old game to allow new users to play and to know the appeal of this game as much as the old users who play the old game. So there might be different cases like this one where the company is willing to invest in remaking old projects and other kinds of games like it happened this time."

The final installment in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, is scheduled for release on April 28, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
