STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl has received a substantial technical overhaul with its 2.0 update, which launched alongside the Cost of Hope expansion. This update, migrating the game to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5, introduces significant improvements to both graphical fidelity and performance, addressing some of the issues that plagued the game since its initial release.
Testing confirms that the 2.0 update delivers noticeable performance gains, particularly in graphically demanding areas like faction settlements and enemy-dense locations. For players with lower-end hardware, these improvements can translate to smoother gameplay where previously performance suffered significantly. For instance, the Steam Machine saw an average framerate increase from 40fps to 51fps at 1080p/High in the Rostok settlement, marking a 28% improvement. More powerful systems also benefit, with an RTX 5080 test rig experiencing a 33% uplift in framerate, reaching 110fps on Epic settings at 1440p with DLSS Quality. While performance gains are less pronounced in less demanding environments, the most impactful improvements are consistently found in the game's most taxing areas.
The update also makes STALKER 2 more accessible on the Steam Deck. While still requiring low settings, the handheld can now achieve an average of 30fps in Performance mode with FSR 4, a considerable improvement over previous versions that struggled to maintain playable framerates even with aggressive upscaling. This makes the Steam Deck a more viable platform for playing the game.
Visually, the 2.0 update refines environmental details and lighting. While some players may prefer the older, murkier lighting, the new implementation offers more sophisticated shadow casting and improved light diffusion into darker areas. Reflections have also been polished, removing the grainy artifacts previously seen on surfaces like puddles, especially when using upscaling techniques. The developers have also added more foliage throughout the Zone, enhancing its wild and dangerous atmosphere. The newly introduced fog weather condition is noted as a particularly fitting addition that complements the game's tense exploration.
Despite these advancements, the update is not without minor drawbacks. The inclusion of binoculars, a long-requested feature, proved less impactful in practice than anticipated, as their zoom capabilities do not significantly surpass that of a scoped weapon. Furthermore, while overall stability has improved due to years of patching, some minor bugs and occasional crashes to desktop were still encountered during testing. However, these do not detract significantly from the overall positive impact of the 2.0 update, which prioritizes performance and visual enhancements that ultimately create a more polished experience in the Zone.
