GSC Game World has announced that STALKER 2's upcoming story expansion, "Cost of Hope," will be released on August 20. This premium DLC will launch concurrently with the free Update 2.0 for the base game. The expansion is set to delve into the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and will feature a renewed conflict between the game's rival factions, Duty and Freedom.
Update 2.0 represents a significant technical overhaul for STALKER 2, as it will transition the game from Unreal Engine 5.1 to Unreal Engine 5.5. Developers anticipate this move could lead to improvements in performance, lighting effects, visual noise reduction, and overall stability, addressing some of the lingering technical issues present since the game's launch. While the update aims to enhance the game's technical foundation, the developers acknowledge the potential for unforeseen complications that could arise from such a substantial engine change.
"Cost of Hope" will allow players to revisit the power plant, a location last featured in the 2008 title STALKER: Clear Sky. Early glimpses of the expansion have shown new environmental details and at least one new mutant enemy type, described as an armored humanoid berserker. The expansion's release date places it within the original Summer 2026 window that GSC Game World had previously announced for it, a notable point given the base game's own delayed launch.
