Developer GSC Game World has announced that Stalker 2: Cost of Hope, the game's first major story expansion, will be released on August 20, 2026. The expansion is set to launch on the same day as a substantial free 2.0 update for the base game. Both will be available on PC, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5.
The official description for "Cost of Hope" states that "the longstanding conflict between the Zone’s leading factions — Duty and Freedom — takes a dramatic turn. As tensions rise and the fragile peace between them begins to unravel, the fate of the Zone hangs in the balance." Players will once again assume the role of Stalker 2 protagonist Skif, whose journey is drawn into events that occur concurrently with the main game's narrative via a mysterious PDA signal. GSC Game World has indicated that the expansion will offer dozens of hours of new content.
The free 2.0 update will bring the game to a newer version of Unreal Engine 5, upgrading from version 5.1 to 5.5.4. GSC Game World has promised new content and general improvements with this update, though specific details remain scarce. The developer has stated that more information will be shared soon.
Stalker 2 originally launched in November 2024 for PC and Xbox Series X and S, also arriving on Game Pass. It later became available on PlayStation 5 in November 2025. The game has achieved significant commercial success, surpassing 1 million copies sold within its first two days and accumulating over 6 million players to date. The developer has faced understandable delays in its development timeline.
