GSC Game World has released update 2.1 for STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl, an update that refines the game's A-Life NPC simulation system. This system governs the behavior of non-scripted characters, allowing them to interact, fight over territory, and engage in ambient activities even when not directly observed by the player. The 2.1 patch allows players to increase the visual range of these A-Life NPCs and extend the distance from which their activities, such as firefights, can be heard.
The developers have cautioned that increasing the A-Life bubble beyond the default 'Recommended' setting could lead to performance issues, including lower framerates, quest instability, and crashes. However, testing on a mid-range system with an RTX 4060, DLSS set to Quality, and the High graphics preset (with draw distance on Epic) revealed minimal performance degradation. An average of 93fps on the Recommended setting remained largely consistent, dropping only slightly to 91fps on the 'Highly Extended', 'Maximum', and 'Dynamic' settings.
While the performance impact appears negligible on the tested hardware, one peculiar side effect of increasing the A-Life distance setting has been observed: it seems to affect the range at which faction markers appear on binoculars. Furthermore, setting the A-Life distance to 'Maximum' appears to artificially increase the zoom level of the binoculars, a bug that, while unintended, offers a potential magnification benefit alongside the improved NPC simulation.
Beyond the A-Life enhancements, update 2.1 also introduces a new fast travel mechanic. Players can now tag along with roaming stalkers, using them as mobile fast travel points. However, this feature is constrained by the NPC's current patrol route, limiting travel destinations to places directly on their path.
