Cloud Imperium Games has unveiled a new trailer for
Squadron 42, the single-player component of the ambitious space simulation MMO Star Citizen. The footage showcases cinematic cutscenes featuring a star-studded cast alongside gameplay snippets of both ground-based first-person shooting and space combat. The game, which has been in development for over a decade, is now available to wishlist on Steam, with a target release window of the second quarter of 2027.
The trailer details the game's narrative premise: set in the year 2945, players enlist as a rookie in the United Empire of Earth Navy. Facing threats from outlaws and alien forces, they embark on a perilous journey aboard a massive capital ship, forging relationships and making critical decisions that will determine their path and legacy within a galactic war. The game promises a blend of action, exploration, and interactive cinematic sequences.
A Stellar Cast
The voice and likeness of numerous acclaimed actors are featured prominently in the trailer. The cast includes:
- Gary Oldman
- Mark Hamill
- Gillian Anderson
- Mark Strong
- Liam Cunningham
- Andy Serkis
- Henry Cavill
- Ben Mendelsohn
- John Rhys-Davies
The trailer frames the game with a tone reminiscent of military sci-fi, though its narrative focus suggests a more personal story within a grand space epic.
The Star Citizen Saga
Star Citizen itself, a multiplayer space trading and flight-action MMO spearheaded by Chris Roberts, was announced in 2012. It has since become one of the most highly funded crowdsourced entertainment projects, amassing over a billion dollars. Despite this, the game has remained in development for over a decade, with an early access version released in 2017. As of 2026, it continues to face criticism for game-breaking bugs, repetitive missions, and various other issues.
Further controversy has surrounded Star Citizen's monetization, particularly the availability of in-game ships priced at hundreds to thousands of real-world dollars. The more contained scope of Squadron 42 may offer a more polished and better-received experience compared to its MMO counterpart.
