Players of the MMORPG Star Trek Online have come together to pay homage to Sir Patrick Stewart, the celebrated actor who recently passed away at the age of 86. Stewart was best known for his iconic portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and subsequent films.
The game's community spontaneously organized virtual memorial services, with players forming elaborate formations of ships, including Galaxy Class vessels, to create Guards of Honor. These gatherings were often accompanied by fireworks, symbolizing the players' respect and grief for the actor and the character he embodied.
One player, sharing on the STO subreddit, described the emotional impact of witnessing these events. "Like so many others, absolutely devastated to hear about the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart, to lose the Captain who defined Star Trek for my generation," they wrote. The player highlighted the beauty of the spontaneous community reaction, noting how "without a word everyone just gathered into formation and let fly the fireworks." They added that it was "something beautiful about that to me, to see so many people just come together without any prompting to just be there for each other, to show their love and respect for this incredible person."
Following these tributes, players have begun petitioning Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios for permanent in-game memorials. Suggestions include recreating Picard's family vineyard, Château Picard, as a tranquil explorable location on Earth, offering a quiet space for players to gather and remember the actor. Other proposals include adding a statue of Captain Picard at Starfleet Academy with a memorial plaque, or instituting an annual remembrance event.
Cryptic Studios itself issued a statement acknowledging Stewart's passing, stating, "In an era where no one was sure whether Star Trek HAD a future, your warmth and your sturdiness gave us hope. For seven years, you were the Captain of the Enterprise, and you held yourself with that dignity in all walks of life. A knight in the truest sense of the word, and a man who will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace, Sir Patrick Strewart."
Sir Patrick Stewart's passing has been met with widespread tributes from across the entertainment industry, including from his Star Trek co-stars, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, and fellow actors Sir Ian McKellen and Hugh Jackman. Bethesda also paid tribute to Stewart for his role as Uriel Septim in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
