Star Trek Online Players Hold In-Game Tributes to Sir Patrick Stewart

Players of the long-running MMO Star Trek Online have organized in-game memorials to pay tribute to the late Sir Patrick Stewart, the actor celebrated for his iconic role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The tributes occurred following news of Stewart's passing at the age of 86.

Large gatherings took place across virtual Starfleet space. Players convened at Starfleet Academy, holding torches aloft in a collective show of respect. Simultaneously, numerous starships assembled around Earth Spacedock, with some participating in a coordinated firework display. These events saw player counts surge, with reports indicating an increase from the usual 1,200 concurrent players to approximately 2,000.

Stewart's portrayal of Captain Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation is considered one of the character's most definitive performances. He reprised the role for the series Star Trek: Picard, which ran from 2020 to 2023. His enduring impact on the franchise has led to calls from some within the Star Trek Online community for a permanent in-game tribute.

One popular suggestion is the addition of Château Picard, Picard's vineyard estate on Earth, as a visitable location within the game. As of this report, the game's development team has not formally responded to these proposals, though they did post a heartfelt message on social media. "In an era where no one was sure whether Star Trek HAD a future, your warmth and your sturdiness gave us hope," the official Star Trek Online account stated. "For seven years, you were the Captain of the Enterprise, and you held yourself with that dignity in all walks of life. A knight in the truest sense of the word, and a man…"
