Developers at Quantic Dream, the studio behind narrative games like Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human, have gone on strike over impending layoffs that they believe will critically endanger the development of the upcoming Star Wars Eclipse. The studio announced Star Wars Eclipse at The Game Awards in 2021, but details regarding its progress have been scarce since.
This action follows the recent discontinuation of Quantic Dream's MOBA, Spellcasters Chronicles, which launched in February 2026 and was taken offline earlier this month. In the aftermath of this title's failure, the studio reportedly plans to lay off 115 employees. During a visit from Lucasfilm representatives to assess Star Wars Eclipse's development, striking workers informed Gamekult, as translated by Kotaku, that the game's completion would be impossible with such significant staff reductions.
"We believe that, as things stand, the game literally cannot be finished if the redundancy plan is implemented as currently scheduled," one developer, identified as Theo, stated. Another developer, Jules, emphasized that the strike is not an act of sabotage but a plea for necessary staffing. "We could manage to release it with 115 additional people, and that wouldn’t be ‘overstaffed’: it’s what’s needed. We’re understaffed," Jules argued.
The striking employees contend that integrating these 115 developers into the Star Wars Eclipse project, rather than dismissing them, would strengthen the team and potentially avert intense crunch periods and tight deadlines. Their statements suggest that the game, despite its announcement over four years ago, remains far from completion.
Neither Quantic Dream nor Lucasfilm has officially commented on the strike. Quantic Dream's last public statement regarding Star Wars Eclipse, made around the time of the Spellcasters Chronicles' discontinuation and the announcement of layoffs, asserted that "The development of Star Wars Eclipse is not affected by this decision and continues as planned."
