The development of Quantic Dream's upcoming title, Star Wars Eclipse, is reportedly at risk of cancellation due to proposed layoffs at the studio. The French video game union STJV recently called for a national industry strike, initiating a picket line at the developer's studio, citing that 115 jobs are potentially on the line as part of an "internal reorganisation." Developers speaking to Gamekult, as reported by VGC, suggest these layoffs could critically impact the game's completion.
One developer, identified as Jules, stated that the strike aims to "save Star Wars Eclipse" and argued that the affected staff are essential, not indicative of overstaffing. "We’re understaffed, like in many other companies in the sector, because bosses know very well that passion will lead people to crunch time and that games will eventually be released," Jules explained, criticizing the unsustainability of such industry practices.
Another developer, Théo, indicated that the game "literally cannot be finished if the redundancy plan is implemented as currently scheduled" without the 115 individuals whose roles are reportedly at risk. "We absolutely need the 115 people who have been inactive (or almost) for a month already," Théo added, noting that a month of lost production time during which employees could have been trained on the game's specific tools is a significant setback.
Star Wars Eclipse was first revealed in 2021. Little has been shown of the game since then, though reports indicate it will feature multiple playable characters and be set during the High Republic era. Quantic Dream has faced previous accusations of abusive working conditions, though the current state of the studio outside of these layoff reports remains unclear.
