Star Wars: Galactic Racer is set to explore a less-traveled facet of the beloved science-fiction universe: professional sports. Developed by Fuse Games, the title will feature players entering the Galactic Racing League, offering a departure from the franchise's typical focus on lightsaber duels and the Force. "I think we know Star Wars fans; they crave a story," said Fuse Games CEO Matt Webster to GameSpot. "They want to be immersed in the world of Star Wars. They want to see new things in this wonderful galaxy that they love, meet new characters, and we've got all of that."
The game aims to differentiate itself by telling a sports-focused narrative, which Webster described as exploring the "everyday" within the Star Wars galaxy, as opposed to its more common themes of prophecy and the Force. The developers have collaborated with Lucasfilm to create new, canon characters and locations for the Galactic Racing League. "It's sports, excitement, entertainment, and it's these are things that we've not seen before," Webster stated. "So, I think what we're seeing, certainly from people who have played the preview, is that this is a racing game for people who don't love cars. This is a Star Wars game for people who aren't necessarily Star Wars fans."
Fuse Games is also looking to innovate within the racing genre by integrating roguelite progression and replayability mechanics with its high-speed gameplay. The studio believes this approach will give the game broad appeal, even to those outside of the typical Star Wars or racing game fanbase.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer is scheduled to launch on October 6 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. For those seeking a Star Wars experience sooner, Star Wars Zero Company, a squad-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars, is also available.
