The long-troubled development of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) Remake may have a potential release window, according to Sabre Interactive's new chief business officer, Steve Allison. Allison indicated that the game is being eyed for a 2028 release, placing it alongside other projects like Space Marine 2 and a few unannounced titles on Sabre's busy schedule.
Allison, who was recently promoted to his role, addressed concerns about the studio's financial strategy, emphasizing that his position is to organize the company for its upcoming projects. While Sabre may explore paid downloadable content for its games, Allison stated the company has "never pursued mtx [and] it's not how we do our products," according to notes captured before being deleted from a Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 subreddit and verified by PC Gamer.
This update offers more substance for fans than the typical assurances that the KOTOR Remake is still in development. The project has faced significant hurdles since its announcement. In May 2022, Embracer Group partnered with Aspyr on the remake, but by July of that year, development was reportedly delayed indefinitely following firings at Aspyr. Embracer subsequently moved the project from Aspyr to Sabre Interactive in August 2022.
Further complications arose, including issues with the game's online presence that Sony attributed to music licensing. In 2023, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors declined to comment on the remake's development status, noting that any statement could become a headline. Since then, the primary communication has been reiterations that the game remains in active development.
While not a definitive confirmation, Allison's comments suggest a potential turning point for the remake, offering a glimmer of hope for those anticipating a modern iteration of the classic Star Wars RPG.
