Development on Star Wars: New Jedi Order, a film intended to usher in a new era for the franchise, appears to be continuing. Production Weekly recently listed the project alongside an untitled film from Dave Filoni as in-development, suggesting that neither project has been shelved despite past silence. These listings do not confirm that either film has been officially greenlit for production.

The New Jedi Order film is expected to pick up approximately 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, with Daisy Ridley reportedly reprising her role as Rey. The narrative will focus on Rey's efforts to rebuild the Jedi Order. This direct connection to the sequel trilogy, which has been met with a largely negative reception from a portion of the Star Wars fandom, presents a significant creative hurdle.

Several writers have been attached to the New Jedi Order project. Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were initially hired but were later dismissed by Disney. Steven Knight also departed the project in 2024. Most recently, Variety reported in January that George Nolfi is now penning the script, with Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy slated to direct. The film was previously slated for a December 17, 2027 release but was removed from Disney's schedule in May 2025.

Details surrounding Dave Filoni's untitled project remain scarce. However, Production Weekly described it as a film that "will focus on the New Republic and will conclude the interconnected narratives told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney Plus series." This description aligns with previous rumors that Filoni's film would serve as a culmination of the Disney+ Star Wars shows. The underperformance of The Mandalorian & Grogu at the box office may influence the film's direction.

Filoni assumed the role of president and chief creative officer at Lucasfilm in January. He has a long history with the franchise, having overseen numerous animated series such as The Clone Wars and Rebels, as well as live-action shows like Ahsoka. While many of his series have been critically acclaimed, Filoni has faced criticism for creating a complex and somewhat insular television universe that requires prior viewing for full comprehension.

Currently, the only Star Wars film with a confirmed release date is Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling as a pilot. This film is set five years after Rise of Skywalker and is scheduled to premiere on May 28, 2027. Despite a lull in live-action Star Wars films, the franchise has maintained its presence through television series and video games, including the recent tactics title Star Wars: Zero Company.
