The newly released novel Star Wars: Legacy by Madeleine Roux aims to address lingering questions and narrative inconsistencies from the Star Wars sequel trilogy, particularly focusing on Rey's decision to adopt the Skywalker name at the end of The Rise of Skywalker. Published by Random House Worlds, the book delves into the development of Rey's character between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
Rey's journey in Legacy centers on her struggle to repair her lightsaber and her internal battle with her own perceived darkness, a conflict stemming from a life of isolation and abandonment. The novel highlights the crucial, albeit previously understated, mentorship role played by Leia Organa. Set between the events of the second and third films of the sequel trilogy, Legacy depicts Rey seeking a Jedi forge on the planet Tython to mend her kyber crystal. This quest is undertaken with Leia, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3PO.
Tython, a planet with deep ties to the Jedi Order, serves as a setting where Rey uncovers a lost Jedi community and relevant historical recordings. The planet was also featured in The Mandalorian and the novel Shadows of the Sith. During her time on Tython, Rey grapples with hiding her inner darkness, a struggle Leia, as Darth Vader's daughter, deeply understands. Leia steps into a guiding role, helping Rey confront these internal challenges.
While Rey seeks a sense of belonging and identity, she also rejects parts of herself. Conversely, Leia reflects on her own journey, wishing she had not denied her Jedi training with Luke or had been able to prevent the losses she experienced. The narrative arc brings them together with the shared understanding that embracing one's true self, including flaws and past experiences, is essential.
The bond between Rey and Leia, as depicted in Legacy, lends significant emotional weight to Rey's declaration of being a Skywalker in The Rise of Skywalker. Although Luke Skywalker initiated Rey's Jedi path, the novel suggests that Leia's patient guidance and willingness to share her vulnerabilities were instrumental in preventing Rey from succumbing to the dark side. This maternal connection between them ultimately supports Rey's acceptance of her chosen lineage.
Star Wars: Legacy is scheduled for release on July 28.
