Star Wars: The Old Republic is set to receive its 8.0 update, which will introduce new ways for players to experience the long-running MMO, including adjustable difficulty settings and a novel character creation system. Developer Broadsword, which took over operations from BioWare in 2023, is looking to reignite player interest by offering options that echo the game's earlier days.
The 8.0 update will feature a raised level cap, new abilities, additional gear, and expanded zones on the planet Ryloth. However, the most significant additions are two new systems designed to address the game's approach to difficulty.
A new difficulty slider will allow players to choose between a "cinematic story-driven journey," a "more demanding combat experience," or the "ultimate challenge." A notable feature of this system is that players can group together regardless of their selected difficulty settings, suggesting an adaptive scaling system will be in place.
Alongside the difficulty slider, the update will introduce "venture" characters. This new mode operates with its own distinct difficulty system, offering both classic and expert options. Characters created under this system will begin a new story from the outset and are promised special rewards for completing additional objectives throughout their playthrough. While the specifics of these rewards remain unclear, the system is intended to evoke the feel of the original Star Wars: The Old Republic experience, a time when combat encounters were generally more challenging.
This initiative to bring back a more demanding gameplay loop could appeal to veteran players and potentially attract new ones. If the venture system's rewards are engaging and its objectives are not overly tedious, it may encourage more players to explore the game's content and engage in group activities once more.
