Timothy Zahn, the celebrated author behind the original Thrawn novel trilogy that revitalized Star Wars in the 1990s, is set to make his first foray into the Star Trek universe. IDW Publishing announced that Zahn will write a new Deep Space Nine graphic novel titled Star Trek: Roc's Egg, scheduled for release in October 2027.
The story will see a Federation JAG investigation called to Deep Space 9 after a mysterious artifact, the Roc's Egg, is seemingly destroyed in transit. The synopsis promises a complex mystery involving a secret auction, wealthy collectors, dangerous criminals, and a murder, suggesting a narrative where "the truth may be more valuable than the treasure itself."
Ángel Hernández, a veteran of Star Trek comics, will provide the artwork for the graphic novel. IDW editor Heather Antos expressed enthusiasm for Zahn's contribution, stating, "I can’t wait to see what Timothy does with this corner of the Star Trek universe. And I think fans are going to have an absolute blast trying to solve the mystery alongside him.”
This move comes at a time when the Star Trek franchise is facing a potential lull in television content, with current series like Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy concluding next year. The announcement of a film reboot has offered some hope, but its progress remains slow. Zahn's involvement is seen by some as a significant injection of talent, reminiscent of how his Thrawn novels are credited with reviving interest in Star Wars during a period of franchise dormancy, ultimately encouraging the creation of the prequel films.
