The competitive landscape of Star Wars Unlimited has seen a significant shake-up with the suspension of the Cad Bane: Still Faster Than You leader card from the Premier format. Game developer Ryan Miles announced the decision, citing the card's overwhelming power and its tendency to warp the game's metagame.
Miles stated that data clearly shows Cad Bane as a "power outlier" that consistently achieves dominant win rates. The card, introduced in the Ashes of the Empire set, quickly became a staple in competitive play due to its aggressive capabilities, which allowed it to weaken opponents and units effectively, especially in the early game. Its impact was evident in recent tournaments, including the winning deck at the Galactic Championship in Las Vegas and its heavy presence in other Sector Qualifiers.
Unlike previous suspensions, such as that of War Juggernaut, which resulted from new cards interacting with existing ones, Cad Bane's dominance was immediate. According to Miles, this was a "development mistake." The development team did not identify Cad Bane as the top-performing leader within the Aggression-Vigilance-Villainy shell and believed he had exploitable weaknesses against control-focused mirror matches. During playtesting, aggressive strategies that could counter greedier control decks were not sufficiently optimized, leading to a misread of the eventual metagame and creating an ideal environment for Cad Bane to thrive.
This marks not the first time a card has been removed from competitive play in Star Wars Unlimited. Boba Fett: Collecting a Bounty was previously suspended after appearing in approximately 40% of Top 8 finishers in sector qualifiers. Other cards like Jango Fett: Concealing the Conspiracy and Han Solo: Audacious Smuggler have also faced bans. The suspension of Cad Bane underscores his significant influence, with Miles noting that the leader was actively preventing "an untold number of decks almost entirely out of the meta."
While Cad Bane: Still Faster Than You is no longer permitted in the Premier format for competitive play, it will remain available in other formats such as Eternals and Twin Suns. The suspension aims to foster a healthier and more diverse game environment for Star Wars Unlimited players.
