Bit Reactor's upcoming tactics game, Star Wars Zero Company, will feature only a single Jedi Operator, according to a recent studio AMA. This unique unit, the Jedi Padawan Tel-Rea, is central to the game's narrative and presents a significant challenge for players.
Permadeath is a core mechanic in Zero Company, meaning player-controlled characters can be lost permanently. While most class roles can be filled by recruiting new operators, the game's setting dictates that Jedi are exceptionally rare. Lead designer James Brawley confirmed on the Zero Company Discord server that Tel-Rea is the only Jedi Padawan operator available, emphasizing, "be careful that nothing happens to her!"
Players will have the option to disable permadeath on certain difficulty settings. However, for those embracing the challenge, the game's authored characters, including Tel-Rea, are integrated into the critical path of the story. Once these characters are in play, they become vulnerable, and their survival rests entirely on the player's ability to protect them.
The decision to implement permadeath so strictly, particularly for key story characters, was not made lightly. Narrative lead Aaron Contreras shared that there were internal debates within Bit Reactor regarding the potential impact of the game's mechanics on authored characters' roles in the narrative. Ultimately, the team decided the permadeath system would enhance the gameplay experience. Star Wars Zero Company is slated for release next month, at which point players will discover how these design choices affect the game.
