Blizzard has unveiled a new direction for its storied StarCraft franchise, announcing an open-world shooter set to release in spring 2030. The reveal, made during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026, marks the first new standalone StarCraft title in approximately a decade and represents a significant genre pivot from its real-time strategy roots.

Dan Hay, formerly a lead producer on Ubisoft's Far Cry series before joining Blizzard, introduced the project. "This is something new – an open-world shooter where every step is earned. Not from above, but down on the ground, in the mud, in the fire," Hay stated. The accompanying cinematic teaser depicts a grim narrative following a Terran recruit named Holt, whose initial deployment quickly turns violent on a Zerg-infested battlefield. The trailer's voiceover, which may feature Arcturus Mengsk, speaks of sacrifice and the call to duty for the Dominion.

Details beyond the genre shift and release window are currently scarce. However, the "returns 2030" screen displayed an Xbox logo, suggesting this new StarCraft title will align with Microsoft's strategy of keeping its major releases exclusive to the Xbox platform.

The BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony also featured other significant announcements, including Diablo 5, the next installment in that series, slated for a spring 2029 release, and confirmation of an upcoming animated Diablo series in development at Netflix.
