Blizzard's upcoming StarCraft shooter will adopt a third-person perspective, a significant shift from the franchise's traditional real-time strategy isometric view. According to GameSpot's interview with Blizzard General Manager Dan Hay, the decision to go third-person was driven by the desire for players to experience the full visual presence of their in-game armor.
Hay explained that seeing the character's armor and the weight of their equipment was a primary consideration. "I want to be able to see my armor. First thing we did is we built it, put it on a turntable, and spun it around like, 'Ah, awesome, cool!' I want to be able to see it, so third-person, right?" he stated. This perspective allows players to "see the full weight of everything you have." While the core experience is third-person, Hay also hinted at the possibility of variations, noting that "we don't have the license to, in a couple of spaces, do a little bit different and whatnot."
The development team is focused on ensuring that combat feels impactful and that players embody a sense of power. "Combat has to feel powerful. You're in this armor; you're a living tank. You have to feel powerful," Hay emphasized. He described the desired player sensation when wielding weapons like the Gauss rifle, aiming for a feeling of pushing through enemies like the Zerg, while also conveying the threat of those enemies. "The Zerg have to feel like those raptorial claws are going to shuck you like an oyster in that thing. So you have to feel the weight of all that."
Beyond combat, Blizzard aims to deliver on player expectations for exploration, discovery, and a sense of disruption within the game world. "We want to feel those moments. We want to feel the exploration, the sense of discovery, and we also want to feel this notion of disruption—that when I go out into the world, it pushes back in a way that I wasn't expecting, and then I have to figure out a new way to play," Hay added.
Hay also confirmed that the game is intended to be a single-player experience, or at least that the single-player aspect is the primary focus. He shared that the early reveal, despite the game not being slated for release until 2030, was a deliberate choice by Blizzard.
