A sequel to Bethesda's ambitious space-faring RPG Starfield is unlikely to materialize, according to Kurt Kuhlmann, the studio's former Lead Systems Designer. Speaking with FRVR, Kuhlmann stated, "I don’t think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2."
While Starfield received a "mostly-positive" review from IGN, it proved to be a divisive title among players. IGN reviewer Dan Stapleton noted that despite its challenges, the game's "expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat" eventually made its allure difficult to resist.
Kuhlmann expressed that a sequel could have potentially realized Todd Howard's original vision more effectively, stating, "I think with the lessons learned on Starfield, a Starfield 2 could have been much closer to the game that Todd [Howard] had [in mind]." He implied that the game, despite ongoing improvements and planned DLC, has fallen short of Howard's initial ambitions.
Bethesda Game Studios continues to support Starfield, with Todd Howard confirming in July that the studio would be expanding the game with new stories, gameplay enhancements, and additional updates, including new "Starborn content" slated for next year. However, Kuhlmann's assessment suggests these efforts may not be enough to warrant a full sequel.
The studio's focus appears to be shifting towards The Elder Scrolls VI, which is reportedly still several years away from release. Additionally, Obsidian Entertainment has been tasked with developing a new Fallout title. Given these ongoing projects, any potential Starfield sequel would likely be many years in the future, if it were to happen at all.
