Despite recent upheaval within Xbox development teams, Undead Labs' upcoming zombie-survival title State of Decay 3 appears to be in good shape. A 30-minute hands-on session with an early alpha build at gamescom 2026 revealed a game that builds upon the series' core tenets while introducing notable improvements to gunplay, movement, and survival mechanics.

The foundational elements of community management and base-building remain central to State of Decay 3. However, these systems have seen expansion. Facilities can now feature branching upgrade paths that allow for specialization, rather than linear progression. The assignment of survivors to specific facilities also carries greater weight, with character traits potentially boosting a facility's effectiveness. For instance, survivors with medical perks can accelerate recovery rates for others in the settlement.

A deeper trait system is also a key focus, with each procedurally generated character possessing unique perks and quirks that can evolve. These traits appear to have a more significant impact than in previous entries. One survivor's "takes long showers" trait, while consuming more water, might be offset by their proficiency in melee combat. Conversely, a character with sniper training might offer increased damage with long-range weapons and headshots but is more prone to injury, a factor that becomes more critical with a granular injury system that applies specific debuffs to combat and movement capabilities.

Managing a large roster of survivors and leveraging their distinct traits becomes a dynamic challenge when deciding who to control in the field and who to assign to base operations. The hope is that these systems will prove as impactful in extended play sessions as they did during the preview.

Combat in State of Decay 3 has been refined, offering smoother and more impactful gunplay. The preview demonstrated the effectiveness of weapons like the AK-47 for crowd control and a silenced pistol for precise headshots. Beyond direct combat, players can utilize environmental hazards such as flammable oil spills or employ stealth for more tactical engagement with smaller groups of zombies. A running slide allows for knockdowns and subsequent melee finishers, adding variety to close-quarters combat. These combat styles can be further amplified by controlling survivors whose skills and traits align with them.

Map-wide territory control is a primary objective, achieved by clearing infestation sites and preventing their resurgence. Infestations will naturally respread over time, and settlements remain vulnerable to sieges, presenting a persistent survival challenge. This ongoing threat necessitates careful management of resources like food, water, and other utilities to sustain the survivor community.

Infestation networks are visible on the world map, spreading across the game's large open world encompassing various towns and facilities. Eliminating infested settlements and plague nests is crucial for stemming their spread and leads to intense battles. These hotspots often feature intricate, dungeon-like areas where players must destroy the infestation's core by locating and destroying four weak points. Upon breaching the heart of an infestation, a larger horde of zombies attacks, creating chaotic encounters. Successfully destroying the core neutralizes the remaining zombies.

State of Decay 3 will feature drop-in/drop-out co-op multiplayer, allowing players within a session to explore the open world without restriction. The development team also indicated the presence of a dynamic difficulty system designed to prevent players from overwhelming the game's challenges too easily, potentially adjusting the pressure if players struggle. While the early alpha build exhibited some rough technical performance, these aspects are expected to be refined as development progresses.

State of Decay 3 is slated for a closed playtest at the end of 2026, with a full release planned for 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam.
